Community-Based E-Learning
Sentient Research, a leading research and consulting firm specializing in public health and community empowerment, partnered with RIPE to design and develop a comprehensive series of culturally sensitive e-learning modules.
The training materials were designed for community-based organizations (CBOs) responsible for implementing these programs on the ground. Through thoughtful instructional design, inclusive language, and scenario-based learning, the modules aimed to equip CBO staff with the knowledge, confidence, and cultural fluency required to deliver services effectively. The end goal: strengthen capacity within CBOs, improve program delivery, and ultimately empower the transgender women served by these vital HIV programs.
THE RIPE STUFF
The Challenge
The project required transforming existing content into engaging, accessible, and impactful e-learning courses. Sentient Research aimed to:
- Address the specific cultural and linguistic needs of Latina and Black transgender women.
- Develop three versions of the training: two in English (general and culturally adapted) and one in Spanish.
- Ensure high interactivity, accessibility compliance, and seamless integration into the CDC’s TRAIN LMS.
Each training spanned 6–8 hours, divided into 24 individual modules, requiring thoughtful design to ensure engagement while maintaining clarity and learning outcomes.
Our Approach
RIPE followed a structured, collaborative process to deliver on Sentient Research’s vision:
Discovery & Planning
We conducted a thorough learning analysis to identify target audiences’ needs and outline clear learning objectives.
Storyboarding & Design
- We developed detailed e-learning storyboards, wireframes, and interactive content maps.
- Applied design thinking principles to simplify complex information while maintaining a learner-centric flow.
Development & Interactivity
Using Lectora Online, we created engaging e-learning modules for HIV programs that included:
- Simulations
- Knowledge checks
- Multimedia content (provided by Sentient Research)
- All courses adhered to Section 508 and WCAG 2.0 accessibility standards.
Quality Assurance & Deployment
Through iterative testing and multiple revision cycles, we ensured the modules were error-free, accessible, and fully compliant for integration into CDC’s TRAIN LMS.
“Ripe Media was flexible, hardworking, and easy to work with. They not only delivered high-quality courses but were also prompt at resolving issues and implementing feedback throughout.”
